Leptis Magna

Amphitheatre and Circus at Leptis Magna, Libya. Leptis Magna started as a Phoenician settlement, and ended as a Byzantine Fortress, run over by the Arabs in the 7th century, but in the mean time was one of the most prosperous cities in Roman Africa. You’ll find bilingual Latin and Punic inscriptions dating as late as the first century AD, and some amazing monuments built by emperor Septimius Severus (192-212), who was born here.
