Motya (now: Mozia) – a small island in the bay of Marsala on the west coast of Sicily. It was a punic city, probably started as a trading settlement. You can see, in the fields, the street grid as well as the dam that in the Roman period connected the island to the mainland. In the right lower corner the modern salt fields.

Ratna Pelle schreef een reactie op mijn betoog van vorige week die erop neer kwam dat ik niet ontsnap aan de bekende clichés en de polarisatie in het debat en in mijn lezing van de historische feiten de facto partij trek tegen Israel. Ze impliceert zelfs dat ik eigenlijk zou vinden dat Israel een ‘mislukt experiment is dat maar beëindigd moet worden’ (waar haalt ze dat in godsnaam vandaan?), en stelt dat als je de feiten niet kent je je het beste kan onthouden van ‘gespierde uitspraken’. Nou wil ik die laatste stelling deels best onderschrijven, maar de achterliggende veronderstelling dat ik de feiten niet zo goed zou kennen is totaal ongefundeerd en grotendeels onterecht. We are looking at Solunto. Both the view and the climb to the city gate are just breathtaking. First Punic, then Greek, then Roman. No meter is flat, yet the street network is completely regular, as if they had to. This is an amazing site when you’re standing with two feet on the ground. It is even more amazing when you actually look at it from outer space. Yet, the question that remains unanswered is: why there? Why so high up the mountain? It is very atypical, especially for the seafaring Phoenicians. Or isn’t it?

Het mag dan druk zijn met colleges en deadlines, zo nu en dan moet een mens ook naar buiten – dat gebeurde al veel te weinig dit jaar. Er is altijd wel een smoes om het toch te houden bij een klein rondje in de buurt. Gisteren niet. Gisteren namen we de bus naar Berinsfield, liepen naar Dorchester, staken daar de Thames over en eindigden uiteindelijk in Shillingford.

Another small collapse at Pompeii: near the Porta di Nola, in the eastern part of the town, part of an opus incertum façade has collapsed. The collapse was in a zone normally open to the public; it is estimated that three cubic meters of rubble has fallen to the ground. Continue reading
